The other day I decided that I will find more information about the Shaheed’s who were honored with Nishan-e-Haiderbecause of there bravery and extra ordinary skills on battle field. So Lance Naik Mahfuz Shaheed was the first one on my list. So I with my wife n kids took off on a bright sunny day and below is the whole Journey..
The Road to Mahfuzabad (Village of Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz Shaheed)
its around 20 KM inside of the Rawalpindi Highway 1-2 KM after the Jinnah Gardens or Behria Town’s board on highway .. there will be a small road going inside … on the left .. you take that road and after around 25-30 KM’s you’ll come across the Mazaar (TOMB) of Lance Naik Mahfuz Shaheed. Its a long single road with a few rough patches filled with beauitful tree’s along the side.

So after a few wrong turns we finally reached the Mazaar of of Mahfuz Shaheed and the village was so nice and clean like you always get the feeling when you visit Cantt areas they keep exceptional cleaning on the roads and streets , so this was like those.. The Mazaar is one big room that holds the GRAVE of Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz Shaheed and his Mother who died after 18 Months of demise of her son.
Family of Muhammad Mahfuz Shaheed
The family consists of 4 sibilings or two brothers and two sisters in total where Mahfuz was the younger son. His Mother died after 18 Months of his Myterdom and his father died in 2003. His brother’s house is near the Mazaar … 2 mins walk. Two of his sisters are married one in texila and other in lahore. The elder brother named Muhammad Maruf has two sons one is a major in Pakistan Army and Other is a student. He was so proud of his younger br
other and said that he didn’t only make the family proud but the whole village and country proud because of his bravery.
Childhood of Mahfooz Shaheed :
Mahfooz Shaheed was very active and energetic from the childhood. Was famous for his talent in KABADI in his and other nearby villages. His grandfather used to share his war stories of Jang-e-Azadi and how he faught for the freedom of Pakistan. This kept inspiring him to become part of Pakistan Army so that he could also do his part for this great country.
Mahfuz Shaheed in 1965 War:
In the war of 1965 Mahfuz Shaheed played a pivotal role and he volunteered for many difficult operations during the war. Although he didn’t get any scratch from any fighting from that war. However, after the myartodem of Major Aziz Bhatti, he used to keep his picture in his pocket and wish for a similar oppertunity where he could show his bravery and bring same honor for his family & country. He got his chance in 1971 War.

At the time of India-Pakistan War of 1971, Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz was serving in Company “A” of 15 Punjab Regiment deployed on 
the Wagah-Attari Sector. On the night of December 17-18, his company was assigned the task of occupying Phul Kanjri village located in the same sector. Lance Naik Muhammad Mahfuz was assigned to Platoon No. 3, which was designated as the forward unit in the assault. Thus this Platoon had to face torrential volleys of enemy fire from concrete Pill boxes. When the entire Company “A” was about 70 yards from the Indian position, it was pinned down by an unceasing frontal and cross fire from automatic weapons. On top of that the enemy artillery also opened up its fire with the break of dawn. Mahfuz, whose machine-gun was destroyed by an enemy shell, charged towards the Indian defenses. His heroic feat led to the success of the Pakistani assault.
When Mahfuz was killed the Indian Army Officer picked his body himselves and said look at this brave soldier if he was in Indian Army I would have recommended him for the highest award. He was a brave man. The body was returned with this citation.
Although Nishan-e-Haider was not awarded to him at that time, even the family didn’t know about this until one day Maruf (Elder brother) heard about this news on Radio about the courage and bravery of his younger brother.
The Change of Village Name from Malikabad to Mahfuzabad
The name of the villege was changed from Malikabad to Mahfuzabad to honor the legacy of this brave chap. There was no linking road or electricity or gas in the village but after this the Govt. brought every facility to the village.
We are a proud Nation because of the bravery of such extra ordinary individuals. I alongwith whole nation of Pakistan are indebted to you because of the honor you brought us.

The highest gallantary award and is the senior most among civil and military awards. It is admissible to all ranks for acts of heroism or conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger or devotion to the country in the presence of the enemy on land, at sea or in the air.

i remember wen we were in 2,3 we used to go to school on 14th Aug… had to reach school before 8am . the whole school… no no not only school but also the whole Pakistan had to pray the national anthem at sharp 8am………… wat a zealous moments they were… i love those days
