Pakistan Motorway – Pride for Pakistan

The road was more like Motorway with steel wires covering the sides, but the whole thing was nothing as compared to our Motorway. The Hotels, the greenry the service. This compelled me to share this taken for granted blessing with you all….
A brief hisotry of Motor way is ;
The M-2 is a motorway in the Punjab province of Pakistan. It is 367 km long and connects Lahore with Islamabad. It passes through Kala shah kaku, Sheikhupura, Khanqah Dogran,Kot Sarwar, Pindi Bhattian, Salem, Lilla, Kot Momin, Kallar Kahar, Balksar, and Chakri before ending just outside the twin cities Rawalpindi and Islamabad. It then continues on to eventually become the M1 motorway linking the twin cities with Peshawar. The M-2 crosses the junction of the M3 (to Faisalabad) at Pindi Bhattian.
Some Interesting Facts:
One of the most expensive motorways in Asia
Has the highest pillared-bridge in Asia (at the Khewra Salt Range)
The most interesting fact is that it can be used by Pakistan Air Force to land or take off many Fighter Jets.
Fuel Stations @ Motorway (CNG with CNG avaialable @ end)
1- Chakri (CNG)
2- Bhera (CNG)
3- Kalarkahar (Just Petrol & Diseal)
4- Balkasar (CNG)
5- Kot Momin (CNG)
6- Sial Moore (Just Petrol & Diseal)
7- Sukheki (CNG)
8- Lahore (CNG)
My suggestion is if you want to go all the way from Islamabad to Lahore on CNG , depending on your car’s tank and engine condition the optimum fuel efficient stops would be @
1- Start of Motorway.
2- Behra.
3- Sukhekey.
4- Lahore.
or to be on the safe side you can always refuel from Chakari & then Bhera onwards. However, its always advised to keep some petrol handy in your cars…
Repair & Response @ Motorway :
One of the best points of motorway is that they give you very strong and timely support. They have placed telephone points at every 1 KM throughout motorway, where in case of emergency you can reach out and ask for help. The Motorway police is very friendly, polite and profesional to help you.
Incase your car is broke then they’ll send in a repair van and that will fix your car if possible for which they won’t charge you unless they have put some hardware (they’ll charge for that specific part)
Incase they are not able to fix the car, they’ll take your car to the nearest exist point or exit point of your choosing in special cases and to the machanic shop where you can get your car fixed. I had faced similar situation a number of times and found Motorway Police to be @ there best …. Loved the experience …
So to Pakistan & Motorway & NHA guys for Motorway its a JOB Well Done ….
Regards ,
- Tirmizi

ap har chez mai positive attitude dhondty hain
JAZAKALLAH
good effort..
hmm u have uploaded an informative video and through dis u can increzase our knowledge,i would like to aid u in ur efforts..
Recognizing the need for high quality road net work in the country, the Prime Minister of Pakistan inaugurated Pakistan Motorway Project covering the whole of country: from Peshawar to Karachi and Karachi to Gawadar and Karachi to Quetta and Quetta to Iran in 1997
and i would add tht it was a massive project involving 3 major river bridges, 8 interchanges, 27 flyovers, 17 bridges on canal, 39 bridges on drains and 4 overhead railway crossing, 183 subways and cattle creeps, 22 culverts on canals and 73 culverts on drains.
as u told tht above a number of stations it covers
hmmm in its history …The project was approved by the National Highway Council headed by the Prime minister of Pakistan in 1992 with 60 percent financing by the Government of Pakistan and 40 percent financing through foreign loans. The project was completed in December 1997 at an estimated cost of Rs. 30.5 billion.
hmm itna bara project banae k lie planning aur time n resources to chahiey hi hoty hain
thank to Almighty Allah and thn our gont 4 giving us Pakistanis such a motorway
This motorway passes through the agricultural belt of the province of Punjab and is associated with several positive and negative impacts on the life of the people living in the urban and rural areas along the motorway. Apart from this, the project of this magnitude diverts massive amount of financial resources needed for other priority projects in other regions of the country, with consequent socio-economic and environmental implications.
hmm yar ye to khne ki batainn hain k is project pe itni lagat laga di gai.. aur wo jo hamary hukumran apni jebo mai dal lety ahin uska kia.. acha hai jo ye motrway itna shandar hai
dakho bhy Pakistan mai jo acha hogaya wo bht acha hogaya ab usk lie conservative hone ki zaroorat nahi hai
thank 2 govt ::)
hmmmmm the M2 was d 1st motrway completed in 98 and thn started M1 n M3
the govt has considerd these things in its maintanance..
•Transport network performance
•Accessibility and opportunity for public transport and other transport modes
•Local area accessibility and connectivity
•Social impact
•Environmental impact
•Engineering feasibility and construction staging
hmmm the priminister of PAKISTAN was Nawaz sharif at tht time.
hmm it was one of the sum of the gud efforts of him
hahahah u rite
the motorway project WAS started with the vision to provide a transportation system that allows anyone to go anywhere in the region easily and efficiently.
hmm ye sb to thek ahi bt mje to bht khwari uthani pari thi
kesi khwari bhai???
NHA se yad aya ….The National Highway Authority is responsible for building and maintaining highways and motorways in Pakistan. The objective of the NHA is to “plan, promote and organize programs for construction, development, operation, repairs & maintenance of National Highways, Motorways & strategic roads.
nice topic bahi…
hmm hamian apne assets pe fakhar hai
PAKISTAN ZINDABAD
hmm yahn to bht achi discussion chal rahi ahi
hmm now im thinking to adopt M2 route 4 our trip
students frm KU …
ya sured visit it..
good effort …keep it up…
keep us in touch wid such informations more n more..
according to my reaserch….. Presently the Pakistan Road density of 0.32 km per esq. the total road network is nearly 2,580,000 km. Transport sector has accounted 20-25% of Federal PSDP in the recent years. Pakistan inland freight and passenger traffic has been growing at an average annual rate of 10.6% and 4.4% respectively during the ten year period between 1991 and 2001. Pakistan has about 4.2 million vehicles on the road, growing at about 8% annually. This includes about 250,000 commercial vehicles.
hmmmm ok
since Pakistan’s national road transportation system mainly depends on north-south links so, the ports are in the south whereas the populous provinces of Punjab and NWFP are in the north. The two existing major north-south links are the Indus Highway (N-55) on the western bank of the Indus River and the G.T. Road (N-5) on the eastern bank. The bulk of Pakistan’s commercial and industrial activity is concentrated along the N-5 corridor.
so this one is the best alternate of commercial work.
hmm rite.
good job TIrmizi bahi
actuallly in our country….. Present condition of road network of Pakistan can be termed as “poor” since the traveling condition of roads and highways has been below the acceptable condition. Results of pavement condition surveys conducted in 2005 reported 43% of the national to be having poor to very poor condition……
and the remaining will be lost in the near future if adequate maintenance and rehabilitation actions are not taken in a timely and effective manner has NHA recently taken over major rehabilitation and maintenance projects through PSDP, World Bank, ADB and Japan assistance. This will definitely reduce the maintenance backlog and maintenance requirements over the next 5-7 years and improve the ride quality of the roads…..
but the recent HDM analysis carried out based on the maintenance program taken over by NHA reveals that the average maintenance requirements of National Highways shall be to the tune of Rs 7.0 Billion per year for the next five years. This investment combined with other maintenance programs resultd in a saving of over Rs 380 billion (NPV) in road transportation costs alone in the next five years.
its ok……. we see that the Lahore-Islamabad motorway benefit Pakistan by improving the socio economics condition of the country. The multidimensional benefits of the project ought to bring healthy, social, economic, geographical and cultural change according to the sources.
The technologies available today offer a number of ways in which we can better manage traffic flows on our motorways, including the hard shoulder to traffic during congested periods, as seen on the M2.
They also offer the potential to implement other innovative managed motorway solutions, such as various form of traffic segregation and access control.
Further, into further, the infrastructure could support in vehicle communications with roadside equipment and other advanced technology system that could improve driver information, traffic management and road safety.
hmm nice information
I must say if you want a slice of peace and stability in a country with a reputation for violence and chaos, try Pakistan’s M2 motorway.
Pakistan is a developing country with functional bureaucracy, well-organized police force, democractic institutions and a powerful army. And Pakistan has more advanced infrastructure than its neighbors, including India. Among the modern infrastructure pieces in place in Pakistan are its motorway system, extensive road network, mobile telecommunications systems, airports, high-speed Internet system, extensive railroad network, gas pipeline etc. A British writer William Dalrymple who visited and compared India and Pakistan on their 60th anniversary described Pakistan as…
“On the ground, of course, the reality is different and first-time visitors to Pakistan are almost always surprised by the country’s visible prosperity. There is far less poverty on show in Pakistan than in India, fewer beggars, and much less desperation. In many ways the infrastructure of Pakistan is much more advanced: there are better roads and airports, and more reliable electricity. Middle-class Pakistani houses are often bigger and better appointed than their equivalents in India. Moreover, the Pakistani economy is undergoing a construction and consumer boom similar to India’s, with growth rates of 7%, and what is currently the fastest-rising stock market in Asia. You can see the effects everywhere: in new shopping centers and restaurant complexes, in the hoardings for the latest laptops and iPods, in the cranes and building sites, in the endless stores selling mobile phones: in 2003 the country had fewer than three million cellphone users; today there are almost 50 million.”
Indeed, for sheer spotlessness, efficiency and emptiness there is nothing like the M2 in the rest of South Asia.
On a recent M2 trip, my driver whizzed along but kept his speedometer firmly placed on the speed limit. Here in this South Asian Alice’s Wonderland, the special highway police are considered incorruptible. The motorway is so empty one wonders if it really cuts through one of the region’s most populated regions.
hmmm ok…
let me complete my experience
“130, OK, but 131 is a fine,” said the driver, Noshad Khan. “The police have cameras,” he added, almost proudly. His hand waved around in the car, clenched in the form of a gun.
On one of my first trips to Pakistan. I arrived at the border having just negotiated a one-lane country road in India with cows, rickshaws and donkey-driven carts.
I toted my luggage over to the Pakistan side, and within a short time my Pakistani taxi purred along the tarmac. The driver proudly showed off his English and played U.S. rock on FM radio. The announcer even had an American accent. Pakistan, for a moment, receded, and my M2 trip began.”
hmm very very nice topic..
ab to mera bhi dil chah raha hai motrway visit karne kaa
gud discussion going..
@ shakeela aftab loog as a route use karty ahin ap as a destination use karlain
According to BMI research, Pakistan has experienced a high level of activity in its infrastructure sector in 2008. This has mostly been focused on the power sector and the road network. In addition, construction of housing has been a top priority. However, the global downturn is hitting Pakistan hard, and the BMI’s 2009 Annual Infrastructure Report for Pakistan is forecasting the construction industry to contract by 6.31% y-o-y in 2009.
The power sector has been the major focus in Pakistan’s infrastructure sector in 2008. Years of underinvestment in electricity generating and distributing infrastructure came to a head in 2008, when there was not enough supply to meet demand, further exacerbated by lack of rainfall almost knocking out Pakistan’s large hydropower sector. It is currently estimated that there is a 3,300MW shortfall in capacity at peak hours; as a result, load shedding has been a common practice.
In an attempt to combat the shortages, a US$30bn investment plan has been announced, which has seen the development of a number of projects. Construction started in 2008 on the 969MW Neelum-Jhelum power plant, which is being built by a consortium comprising Chinese Gezhouba Group Company and China Machinery Export Corporation. Construction of the Diamer Basha Dam, which will have a capacity of 4,500MW once completed, is expected to start in 2009.
n also within the transport sector, the roads have benefited from the majority of attention in 2008. This has been the result of the National Highways Authority’s plans to invest US$5.36bn into the sector. The plans benefited from a US$900mn multi-tranche loan from the Asian Development Bank. The main project being pursued is the National Trade Corridor, envisaged as a main thoroughfare connecting the north of the country to the ports in the south; it is estimated to cost US$6.58bn. Construction of housing has been a major feature in 2008. Residential construction is being carried out under the prime minister’s ‘mega housing scheme’ which involves the construction of one million low cost houses per year.
Pakistan’s economy has been hit hard by the global economic downturn and BMI’s is forecasting real GDP growth of 2.5% y-o-y in 2009, down from 6.8% in 2007. In November 2008, the country received a US$7.6bn 23-month standby loan from the International Monetary Fund to “support the country’s economic stabilization program”.
ok…..The move might help boost investor confidence in the short term; however, it may put off investors looking at long-term infrastructure investments
The 2008 World Bank assessment says that Pakistan is one of the most water stressed countries in the world, and water resources are depleting rapidly. With its water infrastructure in poor condition, the report argues that Pakistan has to invest around Rs60 billion (US$1 billion) per year in reservoirs and related infrastructure over the next five years. In the energy sector, the country will face severe power shortages of around 6,000 megawatts by 2010. Similarly, inefficiencies in the transport sector cost the economy between 4-5 percent of GDP each year.
but we should also know to overcome these constraints, the Government of Pakistan is tripling its annual infrastructure investment from an average of Rs150 billion (US$2.5 billion) to Rs440 billion (US$7.3 billion). However, the bank report points out that mega projects in the past have experienced frequent delays and cost overruns, illustrating a lack of capacity in the industry to plan, program, and execute large projects.
hmmmm many infrastructure projects in Pakistan, including power plants and motorways, are being built and financed on build-operate-transfer or BOT basis. Built on the BOT basis, the M2 motorway has already paid for itself and now generates revenue for Pakistan government.
Pakistan’s infrastructure is a silly discussion.
these comments miss is that there is just enough electricity for less than 20% of the population and that for 75% of the day.
Natural gas is now rationed.
Drinkig water quality is such that you could die washing your rear end with it.
Other than Karachi and Lahore, all other airports’ terminals are only as good as servant quarters. The Piss ant John Wayne Orange County airport is bigger and better than Karachi and Lahore.
Not a single mile of new railway track has been added since the Brits left the area.
calm down ….
very infrmative discussion ….
be positve like tirmizi bhai:)
good work God give u more courage…
hmm keep it up GOD bless u
In absolute terms, Pakistan’s infrastructure is not sufficiently well developed yet to serve its people well. However, I know from personal experience that the infrastructure in Pakistan is much better than what its neighbors have to offer.
I cannot believe that in this day and age, we still have to read what ppl have to say about Pakistan.
hm true…
yes… we should trust our own first hand experience or calculations -
yup yar kab kon kisi ki taraqqi se khush hua he…. proud to b Pakistani
yup proud to b a PAKISTANI ..:) JIEY PAKISTAN..ALWAYS
SOHNI DHARTI ALLAH RAKHEY
QADAM QADAM ABAD TUJHEY ….
Still modern infrastructure is extremely important for any nation, particularly a developing nation like Pakistan.
It is widely acknowledged by most independent observers that Pakistan’s infrastructure in better than India’s or any other nation in South Asia
From personal experience, I can tell you that no roadway is immune from stray animals which slow traffic and cause accidents. I even saw a dangerously overloaded contraption called “jugad” plying on an intercity highway between Delhi and Agra.
good experiences … ppl… i enjoyed… n was toooooooo informative
God bless u all ppl that u thot to share ur experiences n feelngs.
ya sure… i didnt know much abt M2.
NOW I WISH TO VISIT IT 1NCE ATLEAST
ALLAH ap ko jaza e khair ata farmayga
Thanks guys for your feedback and appreciating the efforts …
why the motorway was constructed in only two provinces of pakistan. Is Pakistan started from Pakistan and ended up in Punjab?
yup ite a nice project nd we need such like other mega projects..2 help out the problims of the people nd through this way our country can develop more nd more.

How is the CNG pressure and quality at the CNG stations?
PAKISTAN is a country of a large human power natural resources and have every kind of land which is found in the globe today. PAKISTAN have a large number of cole and water resources which is very important for power generation but due to these hole, today unfortunately PAKISTAN faces one a history bad energy crices.its hole due to our currept and dishonest leaders. if one a very honest leader of PAKISTAN solve only the energy problem 100% surly the hole problems can solves atomatectly.my suggestions are that the govt should conceturc ets a large number of new small and bigger dams throughout the country .new dams are the best option to solve the energy and pourty problems of our country atomatectly .
